NEW PUPPY HEALTH

Health Issues:
Healthy puppies are of the utmost importance at Tarlyn Dachshunds.

*Vet Checked: Our puppies are checked by our veterinarian at 8 weeks old and receive their first
Distemper/Parvo shot, before leaving for their new homes. In our contract, we require the new
owners to take the puppy to their Veternarian for a new puppy health check.

*Immunization: Puppies are immunitized at 8, 12, and 16 weeks. After 16 weeks, puppies should
receive their rabies vaccination. Rabies shots are never given at the same time as any other shot.
A year later,  you will need a booster for the Distemper and Rabies (again don't give at the same
time.)
After the booster shots, there are new vaccine protocols, which 27 Veterinary schools are in
the process of or have already have, changed their vaccinating procedure for cats and dogs.
The theory is not new for breeders, who have known that vaccinating yearly can causes many
problems.  I like to give the example with children.  They get their shots and boosters when they
are very young, but do not continue to receive shots every year. It seems that we are just attacking
the immune system over and over.  Many Veterinarans are suggesting vaccinating every three
years.  My thoughts would be to have a titer test done in order to see where the immunity levels are at.
A titer test consists of drawing blood and having it tested.  Interesting information by  Dr. Jean Dobbs
and the new vaccine protocol can be found on the internet.  SEE MORE INFO ON THIS IMPORTANT
ISSUE AT THE BOTTOM OF THE PAGE.

*Worming: Our puppies are wormed at 4 weeks, 6 weeks and 8 weeks with Nemex 2 wormer.

*Microchipping: Microchipping is a safe way to protect your dog should they ever they get lost or
wander away. The microchip is small chip placed under the skin, between the dogs shoulder blades.
Whenscanned with a special tool, it shows a number that can be traced to the owner. The owner
is contacted and reunited with their pet. Ask your veterariarn for information about this permanent
way of protecting your dog.  There are two companies that offer microchips,  Avid and Home again.
The American Kennel Club offers a service to register this number for a Lifetime Enrollment  fee of
$15.00 when you register your dog. For more information go to www.akccar.org.

*Spay/Neuter: All of our pets are sold with a AKC Limited Registration and a Spay/Neuter Contract.
We do not sell dogs for breeding purposes. Limited registration means the dog cannot be shown
at Dog Shows or its offspring registered with AKC.  The dog can be entered at performance events,
obedience, Rally, agility, and earthdog trials.

*Food: Food is of great importance in order to have a healthy, happy puppy. We feed ProPlan Puppy
(Chicken and Rice)Original Formula.  We strongly recommend this premium brand of dog food and
will provide you with a sample pack to get you started with your new Dachshund puppy.

New Vaccine protocol

When you take your dog/puppy to the vet, don't be overwhelmed by him/her wanting to give your dog every vaccine going.  When they send yearly reminders, you don't have to go.  Go when your your dog needs to see a vet, for an issue.  Remember this is a business and they are taught to sell services.  YOUR DOG- TAKE CONTROL and use common sense with your decisions!

 NEW VACCINATION PROTOCOL
by Dr. Jean Dodd

All of the 27 Vet Universities in the US have followed the immunization protocol as suggested by Dr. Dodd for years. All of these Hospitals will be changing their Vaccination Programs. This is welcome news and you should print this out and take it with you to your Vet should you need reinforcement against over-vaccination.
.
VACCINATION NEWSFLASH :DR. J. DODD’S VACCINE PROTOCOL
I would like to make you aware that all 27 veterinary schools in North America are in the process of changing their protocols for vaccinating dogs and cats.
Some of this information will present an ethical & economic challenge to Vets, and there will be skeptics. Some organizations have come up with a political compromise suggesting vaccinations every 3 years to appease those who fear loss of income vs. those concerned about potential side effects. Politics, traditions, or the doctors economic well-being should not be a factor in a medical decision.
NEW PRINCIPLES OF IMMUNOLOGY
Dogs and cats immune systems mature fully at 6 months. If a modified live virus vaccine is given after 6 months of age, it produces immunity, which is good for the life of the pet (I.e.: canine distemper, parvo, feline distemper). If another MLV vaccine is given a year later, the antibodies from the first vaccine neutralize the antigens of the second vaccine and there is little or no effect. The titer is not "boosted" nor are more memory cells induced. Not only are annual boosters for parvo and distemper unnecessary, they subject the pet to potential risks of allergic reactions and immune-mediated hemolytic anemia. There is no scientific documentation to back up label claims for annual administration of MLV vaccines.
Puppies receive antibodies through their mothers milk. This natural protection can last 8 - 14 weeks. Puppies & kittens should NOT be vaccinated at LESS than 8 weeks. Maternal immunity will neutralize the vaccine and little protection (0-38%) will be produced.
Vaccination at 6 weeks will, however, DELAY the timing of the first highly effective vaccine. Vaccinations given 2 weeks apart SUPPRESS rather than stimulate the immune system.
A series of vaccinations is given starting at 8 weeks and given 3-4 weeks apart up to 16 weeks of age.
Another vaccination given sometime after 6 months of age (usually at l year 4 mo) will provide LIFETIME IMMUNITY. If your vet insists you have any more, do a titer test. This will check your dogs immunity levels rather then always attacking the immune system, with another shot.

RABIES- Is usually given after your puppy has completed all his distemper shots, never at the same time.  The rabies shot should have a booster after a year and this shot  will be a 3 year rabies vaccine. If your dog/puppy has a reaction, don't let the vet give it the next year!A vet did this and the dog almost died.  Do a titer for rabies and if it comes out good, get an exception to having a rabies shot.

WARNINGS

If you are on medication, take it when your dog isn't in the room.  If you drop a pill, most dogs would get it before you have time to find it on the floor.

Another thing to be aware of is XYLITOL Which is used as a sweetner in  sugar free gum and other products that we use.  Look it up on google, to find out how it can affect your animals.

FLEA & TICK PRODUCTS  MAY CAUSE SEIZURES & Tremors, for more info contact me on my contact page and I will forward you the lengthy report on the flea & tick products.

Cancer in dogs. I have an interesting article on vaccines and causes of cancer.  Contact me and I will send you the information.
